Blue Light the Thief of Dreams

We all do it. Hop into bed and reach for the phone. For most of us, this evening routine is second nature, but we could be doing ourselves harm. As well as disrupting our ability to get a good night’s sleep.Read on and find out why blue light at night could be affecting your sleep and your health.

What is blue light?

Each different kind of light has a slightly different effect on us. And whilst the blue kind can have a positive effect during the day, it’s quite a different story at night time. This kind of light can affect our mood, our attention and our ability to sleep. Electronic devices give off this exact kind of light, so spending time on them before bedtime can be especially disruptive to sleep.

Why is exposure to blue light bad for us?

There have been numerous studies into the links between blue light and a plethora of diseases. There’s no absolute proof that this light contributes to cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc but we do know that exposure to it can suppress the secretion of melatonin.Melatonin helps to maintain and balance our circadian rhythms, which in turn helps to regulate our internal body clock.

How does blue light affect sleep?

Blue light is known to have a dramatic effect on our ability to sleep. But as well as that, you run the risk of coming across something that will put your mind into overdrive.Something to worry about the next morning?Leave it till then. The chances are there’s very little you can do about it until the next day as it is. So if you can, leave the phone in another room!

Get the right light

If you do need a light to read at night time, just try a different colour. Sounds too simple, but research has shown that red light is the least likely to affect your sleep.Leave the phone alone for at least two hours before you head to bed. This will give the mind time to relax too. All of which gives you a much better chance of getting a good night’s sleep. And if you’re really in need of a good 8-hour rest, then make sure you get as much natural light as you can during the day! This will boost your ability to sleep as well as keep you bright and alert during the day!
